Background

Character creation

Main article: Character Creation (Skyrim)

Character creation is very much the same as it was in Oblivion. Design of your own Dragonborn is not very detailed, but it does have many options to choose from. You, as the player, can determine the race, height, gender, and more. The choices you make will affect how the people of Skyrim and beyond react to your protagonist.

Hadvar’s comment when he calls the Dragonborn will change based on the race chosen by the player:

Race Hadvar’s comment
Altmer “You’re not with the Thalmor Embassy, are you high elf? No, that can’t be right…
Argonian “Are you a relative of one of the Riften dock workers, Argonian?”
Bosmer “Not many wood elves would choose to come alone to Skyrim.
Breton “You from Daggerfall, Breton? Fleeing from some court intrigue?”
Dunmer “Another refugee? Gods really have abandoned your people, dark elf.”
Imperial “You’re a long way from the Imperial City. What’re you doing in Skyrim?”
Khajiit “You with one of the trade caravans, Khajiit? Your kind always seems to find trouble.”
Nord “You picked a bad time to come home to Skyrim, kinsman.”
Orsimer “You from one of the strongholds, Orc? How did you end up here?”
Redguard “What’re you doing here, Redguard? You a sellsword? A sailor from Stros M’Kai?”

Walkthrough

Tullius: “Ulfric Stormcloak. Some here in Helgen call you a hero. But a hero doesn’t use a power like the Voice to murder his king and usurp his throne.”
Ulfric: “<muffled grunts>”
Tullius: “You started this war, plunged Skyrim into chaos, and now the Empire is going to put you down, and restore the peace.”

Dragon attack

Just before the Imperial Headsman has the opportunity to decapitate the Dragonborn, Alduin arrives and disrupts the execution. With the execution stopped and the town in chaos, the Dragonborn take the opportunity to escape custody. Running towards a nearby tower, the Dragonborn meet up with Ralof and Ulfric Stormcloak, leader of the Stormcloaks, who also managed to escape. Quickly the Dragonborn learn that your hiding place is not safe, as Alduin blasts a hole in the tower, killing another Stormcloak in the process. Ralof will instruct the Dragonborn to jump out of the tower from the hole into a nearby inn, with the promise that he will meet up with the Dragonborn when he can. After jumping down and exiting the inn, the Dragonborn find that Helgen has become heavily damaged in quite a short time, with many buildings damaged and burning. As the Dragonborn you run into the street, an Imperial Soldier, Hadvar, will tell the Dragonborn to follow him to safety. Hadvar will then lead the Dragonborn to the Helgen Keep. At the entrance of The Keep, Ralof catches up with the Dragonborn.

You then have to choose to either have Hadvar or Ralof accompany you the rest of the way. Your choice will create some minor changes in the story during the Civil War questline. This does not affect which side you are able to take in the war later in the game.

Helgen Keep

The only main difference at the beginning of the game between following Ralof and following Hadvar is that if you follow Hadvar you get light armor and if you follow Ralof heavy armor, which is easily obtainable at the beginning.

Following Ralof

Upon entering the keep, you and Ralof discover the body of a dead Stormcloak, Gunjar. After freeing you from your bindings, Ralof instructs you to take Gunjar’s gear for your own use, as he won’t be needing it. While you equip yourself, Ralof examines the doors. He discovers one door is locked, and the other can’t be opened from the side you’re on. Luckily, an Imperial Captain and Imperial Soldier will come through and open the door from the other side (if you are seen before the gate is open the captain will be alert and shout “Its the Stormcloak prisoners!”). Once they open the door, you are forced to kill them in order to recover the key to the other gate from their bodies, and you can gain a full set of heavy Imperial armour from the Imperial captain. Going through the now opened up path, you will discover a store room, with two more Imperial Soldiers gathering supplies.

After defeating the soldiers, Ralof advises you to go through the barrels to find potions. If you’re new to The Elder Scrolls, take the time to do a thorough search of the area and all containers. This is a good opportunity to familiarize yourself with Skyrims controls and menus. When searching you can find the barrel with the potions in it, and there is a magicka potion over near the table with bread, tankards, and a Potion of Minor Healing. In between the barrel of potions and the cabinet, there is a crate containing 5 Rock Warbler Eggs, which can be used in alchemy.

Continuing down, you arrive at a battle between an Imperial torturer and his Assistant against two Stormcloaks. After defeating the soldiers, Ralof points to a cage, there is a dead mage in the cage that wears a Novice Hood and Novice Robes. Along with this, you can loot 25 septims and two Potions of Minor Magicka. Next to him are a few septims and the spell tome for the spell Sparks. Ralof gives you 12 lockpicks, and suggests you pick the lock to get to the items. You can pick the rest of the locked cells for experience. In the armory cage, there are two lockpicks, an iron shield, and a couple of books. On a table outside the cage, there is a knapsack containing 4 lockpicks and some gold. Next to it are Book of the Dragonborn and an iron dagger. The torturer you (or Ralof) killed also has a steel dagger, the only one in the keep.

When you have finished, you go through a hallway lined with cells. One of these cells consists of a skeleton, Bone Meal, and a coin purse. After that, you enter a room with prisoners in cages. All of them are deceased, and there are 3 more skeletons, all of which also carry Bone Meal, and they usually carry septims on them as well. In one of the cages, there is a dead Stormcloak wearing Ragged Robes.

You eventually enter a natural cave, filled with soldiers guarding it for General Tullius. There are a few archers and swordsmen in the cavern, along with another soldier wearing heavy armor. The archers all are positioned dangerously close to a pool of flammable oil, which you can light using the Flames spell. After killing them, any surviving Stormcloak Soldiers will stay behind. You then find a drawbridge that connects to another part of the cave, this section not occupied by the Imperials. Shortly after arriving in this cave, Alduin will roar, destroying the bridge behind you. When following Ralof, you will find a skeleton near the passage leading towards the cavern leading towards Frostbite Spiders. Near the skeleton is an Iron Dagger, Potion of Minor Healing, and Coin Purse. Shortly after you enter it, the passage behind you collapses, forcing you to find a way out through there. The next cavern consists of two-four of the smaller variety of Frostbite Spiders, and two larger ones (not to be mistaken for Giant Frostbite Spiders) will drop down from the ceiling. You can loot their bodies, each of them containing Frostbite Venom. Once you defeat the spiders, you and Ralof exit through another passageway.

In the next cave, just in front of you will find a Potion of Health at the fire at the other side of the water. There is also a Iron Dagger. The potion can’t be seen from distance, because it is too close to the fire. After getting the potion, Ralof tells you to stop at the cart, as there is a bear on the other side. He tells you to sneak by, but he also gives you a long bow and 12 iron arrows, in case you’re “feeling lucky.” In the cart next to you, there is a bottle of Alto Wine, and a coin purse. In front of the cart is an iron helmet.

Once you’ve killed/avoided combat the bear, you will see an exit to the cave. Once free, you will see Alduin fly overhead. Ralof will direct the player to his sister, Gerdur, who lives in Riverwood. At this point you can choose to follow Ralof to Riverwood, or split up and find your own way.

Following Hadvar

The story is the same as above, but instead of siding with the Stormcloaks, you side with the Imperials, and fight the Stormcloaks. Also, you don’t fight the Torturer and his assistant when you go to the torture room. If the player allows Hadvar to escort them through the Keep, he will escort the player to their freedom. Once free, Hadvar will direct the player to his uncle, Alvor, who lives in Riverwood.

During this sequence the player’s companion (Hadvar or Ralof) will not fight back if attacked and will regain health immediately after taking damage. Your companion cannot be pickpocketed at all, and cannot be killed due to their essential status.

Loot

Some notable loot found includes:

Object Values: 685 Searching Values Estimate: 3059 Total Area Value: 3744

Following Ralof does grant slightly better heavy armor as one of the guards you must kill is an Imperial Captain, which means you can pick up the Imperial Armor, which gives very helpful protection in the early part of the game. After continuing to Riverwood, Gerdur will give you her house key.

If you side with Hadvar you are free to take the pile of iron and steel ingots which spawn next to the workbench outside Alvor and Sigrid’s house, giving your character a better weapon from the start if you have steel smithing. You can also take some armor and weapons next to the grindstone and in the basement of his house.

You can however steal from Alvor if you followed Ralof to get the weapons and ingots by his forge, but you may be caught – which yields a small bounty – if you’re not careful.

Trivia

  • This level is the only time you can customize your character’s name and race in Skyrim for free, so be careful and take your time. However, with the addition of The Elder Scrolls V: Dawnguard, one may talk to Galathil in The Ragged Flagon to change their face but not race.
  • Interestingly enough, Alduin roars before the executions and are heard when General Tullius and the Imperial Captain unknowingly mention the events that would see to Alduin’s return and demise.
    • “You started this war! Plunged Skyrim into chaos! And now the Empire is going to put you down, and restore the peace!” (Alduin roars) – It is foretold in the Elder Scrolls that when the Civil War breaks out, Alduin will return.
    • “Next, the [player’s selected race]!” (Alduin roars) – The player’s character is the Dovahkiin, who would defeat Alduin and save Tamriel, foretold in the Elder Scrolls. And this also, shows that the peace has been restored.
  • When the player is forced to decide whether to follow Hadvar or Ralof, If the player waits too long, Alduin will land in the courtyard or the tower upon the Ralof’s location and attack the player with either his Thu’um or his bite.
  • Hadvar is seen behind your cart on the way to Helgen.
  • During Hadvar and Ralof’s “quarrel”, Alduin grabs an Imperial with his talons and throws him into the air.
    • If the player uses the Voice of the Emperor on an Imperial soldier, talking to them will reveal that this Imperial’s name was Caius.
  • If the player stands around in Helgen, Alduin will speak in Draconic (The tongue of the Dovah). Such lines include:
    • “Daar Lein los dii!” – “This World is mine!”
    • “Fen du hin sille ko Sovngarde!” – “I will devour your souls in Sovngarde!” (This line also points to an event following the fight on the Throat of the World.)
    • “Zu’u Alduin, zok sahrot do naan ko Lein!” – “I am Alduin, most mighty of any in the World!”
  • When the player is following Hadvar through the burning buildings, shortly after Alduin has landed upon the wall and spewed fire at an Imperial soldier, the player must go through a group of Imperials. If the player stays for a few seconds, General Tullius will shout “Run, you idiot!”
  • Throughout the entire sequence, up to the point when you make it to the keep and are cut free, you are bound. Without the use of your hands you are unable to defend yourself and unable to perform almost all actions, but you can still level here. If you do not feel rushed to progress through the story, sneaking around the buildings with Alduin soaring above can easily level your Sneak to 30 or more, depending on how patient you are. What this means is that by the time you make it to the keep you have several levels and perks available as soon as you are cut free. (Just make sure Alduin doesn’t Shout at you.)
  • In Helgen Keep, shortly after being Unbound by Hadvar, he will offer the Stormcloaks mercy. Unfortunately, they refuse to take it.
  • If you open all the three cells and the two others at the Toture Room, you can get a skill point in Lockpicking. Since all of them are Novice, it wont be a big problem to open them.
  • If you start to sneak after heading away from the chopping block, the sneak indicator will be partially opened, this signifies that Alduin is searching for the Dragonborn or that someone else can see your movements and are searching for you.
  • If during character creation you don’t know what to name your player, you may go to: Name Generator. It is a name generator made for Oblivion, but the races are generally the same from Oblivion.
  • If the Dragonborn follows Hadvar, there will be more Stormcloak soldiers in the keep and the town than there even was at the start. When Alduin appears, at least three dead Stormcloak soldiers can be seen, and once in the tower with Ulfric, there are two wounded with a medic, and another upstairs. This is already more than there were in the two carts (the Dragonborn’s cart had the thief Lokir, Ralof, and Ulfric and the other had four Stormcloaks) not to mention around ten more in the keep. It is possible that Stormcloak scouts were tracking the carts, ready to save Ulfric, and some entered the battle with Alduin while others retreated to the keep.
  • After encountering the Frostbite Spiders with Hadvar, he will say “What next…giant snakes?”. This is a reference to Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in which Harry and Ron encounter Giant spiders and later on a Giant Snake.
  • If you run fast enough past Hadvar, Vilod will not get attacked by the Alduin.
  • Bugs

Click to see the list of bugs encountered
    • After following Ralof into the first tower, there is a chance that the wall of the tower will not collapse after you follow Ralof up, but that the quest will continue as normal as if the wall had a hole in it.
    • Before entering Helgen Keep, if you push Ralof by running at him, he may not appear inside, making impossible to continue.
    • Once the player meets hadvar after jumping to the inn, if the player sprints directly for the Keep without stopping, Ralof may appear at the Keep and argue without Hadvar being present.
    • Sometimes when following Hadvar, he will disappear yet you can still hear his voice.
    • There is a possibility that Alduin will just fly around without attacking and the headsman will not try to behead you, causing a never ending stance.
    • Occasionally, if the player follows Hadvar and decides to sprint ahead of him a large distance, Hadvar will freeze as if he is waiting for the Dragonborn to catch up with him. This will not hinder progress through the quest, but certain events (E.g. the rocks falling on the drawbridge) will not occur. The solution is simply returning to Hadvar.
    • If the player kills the bear prior to Hadvar handing him a Long Bow, the player will not receive a longbow or iron arrows. No actions will revert this besides loading prior to killing the bear.
    • Sometimes Hadvar will sit and stare at you in silence the whole cart ride. (super creepy) This will prevent you from creating your character. Reloading does not help.

The reason why this happens is if the previous prisoner’s head rolls off the box and not stay inside of it the bug will happen

    •  PC   Under certain ambiguous circumstances* the player may not be able to speak with Gerdur about Ralof or escaping Helgen, making the misc follow-up quest ‘Speak with Gerdur’ impossible to finish without the use of console commands. She will, however, still provide free supplies, as that conversation option is still available for some reason.
    •  360    PS3  Once the quest starts, the player can go into the quest journal, select show on map, and then fast travel to Helgen, this makes you appear outside the gates, but your hands are still bound and you cannot do anything. The sky will be gray from Alduin’s Storm Call. Nothing can be achieved from this and reloading is the only way to get back into Helgen.
    • Sometimes when the first Stormcloak is beheaded there will be no box and the head will roll around (Note: seeing this is actually quite funny)
    • If you decide to follow Ralof into the tower, after killing the two Imperial soldiers you can hack away at Ralof instead of “unlocking that door” and get you one handed or destruction up past 30 or so. this also helps with early leveling and getting a few perks before you’re even into the game.
    • When entering Helgen in the carriage the whole carriage will fly up in the air with everyone inside it and will never stop
    • It is possible to jump to the inn while Alduin is breathing fire into the tower. The result is a humorous event where the player stands on Alduin’s left shoulder, and Alduin pays no attention to it.
    •  PC   360   PS3  If the player manages to fail at jumping to the inn, they will get stuck in an area of Helgen closed off by debris. Console commands may solve the issue, but there is no fix for it on consoles.
    • Sometime the carriage will get stuck and the Player won’t be able to make their character.
    • Sometime if the game is saved and exited before entering the tower in the beginning of the quest, Alduin will not break the wall making it impossible to proceed through to the inn.
    •  360   PS3   Rarely, The sentry will not say “What in oblivion is that?” And Alduin will continue to fly in circles around the watchtower without landing. Reloading the character creation save won’t fix the glitch, so the player will need to start a new game.
    • Sometimes while waiting for the Imperial Captain to push the Stormcloak down so he can be executed, she never does this and she stands there continuously. Only solution is to load at the autosave right after creating your character. No known cause.
    •  PS3   Hadvar will no longer walk you over to the Guardian Stones, but walk you over to Embershard Mine. This does not affect the quest in any way.

The Elder Scrolls

ElderScrolls Logo

The Elder Scrolls (abbreviated as TES) is a series of role-playing video games. The development of The Elder Scrolls series began in 1992, when the staff of Bethesda Softworks – which had until then been a predominantly sports game-producing company – decided to shift the focus of their upcoming Arena from arena combat into role-playing. The team, pulling influences from Ultima Underworld and Dungeons & Dragons, released the massive, open, but ultimately derivative, first-person RPG The Elder Scrolls: Arena in 1994 for DOS PC systems. The game began a tradition of games based on the principles of “being who you want and doing what you want”[1] that has persisted throughout the series’ history. To date, there are five titles in the main series of the game. Two expansions were published for The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, two more accompanying the The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion’s installment, and three others for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. An MMO set in Second Era Tamriel is scheduled for a early 2014 release. [2][3]

While beginning on DOS PC, the series has expanded to video game consoles, starting with The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind on Xbox and eventually expanding to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Four Elder Scrolls titles were released for Java-enabled cell phones, Nokia’s N-Gage, and the PlayStation portable. These titles are known as The Elder Scrolls Travels. Two novels based on the Elder Scrolls universe, The Infernal City and Lord of Souls, were published by Del Rey Books.

Series

Daggerfall

Mynisera
A character from Daggerfall.

The next Elder Scrolls series game—The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall—was published in 1996. Fueled by the modest success of Arena, Daggerfall was even more ambitious than its predecessor. Daggerfall attempted to create a game world twice the size of Great Britain, rendered in a truly 3D engine, and build a skill-system that revolved around skill building rather than experience gains. However, Daggerfall suffered at the hands of that very ambition: Daggerfall, rushed to publication, was found torturously buggy, and prohibitively hardware-intensive. In the opinion of one commentator, despite Daggerfall’s commercial success, “the game still bears the mark of bad code”.[4]

Spin-offs

Following Daggerfall’s release, Bethesda ceased any development on any numbered series title until 1998, developing in the interim The Elder Scrolls Legends: Battlespire, released in 1997, and The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard, released in 1998. Both games had a smaller focus than the numbered series titles: Battlespire limited itself to dungeon-romping; Redguard was a linear third-person action-adventure game. The games sold poorly, and Bethesda flirted with bankruptcy. Only with the cash influx brought by Bethesda’s acquisition by the well-funded ZeniMax in 1999, did Bethesda return to the fore.

Morrowind

Nord morrowind
A Nord warrior from The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.

With The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Bethesda tripled their staff and pushed again towards hardware-intensive gaming. Morrowind saw a return to the old-style expansive and non-linear gameplay, but also a shift towards individually detailed landscapes and items, and a smaller game-world than past titles. Morrowind was released on both the Xbox and the PC, and saw popular and critical success on both, selling upwards of 4 million units by mid 2005. Two expansion packs were quickly developed released for Morrowind between late 2002 and early 2003: The Elder Scrolls III: Tribunal, and The Elder Scrolls III: Bloodmoon.

Oblivion

Sigrid (Oblivion)
A Nord woman in Oblivion.

Work began on The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in 2002, immediately after Morrowind’s publication. Oblivion focused on providing a tighter storyline; improved AI, courtesy of Bethesda’s proprietary Radiant AI; improved physics, courtesy of the Havok engine (used in Half-Life 2); and impressive graphics. The game was released, following much press coverage, on the PC and Xbox 360 in early 2006, and the PS3 in early 2007. Bethesda released two expansion packs for Oblivion in late 2006 and early 2007: The Elder Scrolls IV: Knights of the Nine and The Elder Scrolls IV: Shivering Isles. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion got a 9.5/10 on average out of many different gaming site’s reviews, with or without the expansions.

Skyrim

Sylgja - Face
A Nord woman in Skyrim.

In 2011 Bethesda released The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for the PC, Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3. The game is considered to be a spiritual successor to Oblivion, allowing for non-linear gameplay, with a large number of quests and side quests. In Skyrim, the “Last Dragonborn“, or player character, starts as a prisoner awaiting execution, as in its predecessors, Oblivion, Morrowind, Daggerfall and Arena.

Skyrim excluded the conventional class-bases system of its predecessors in favor of more unique customization through skills and perk trees. The Birthsigns from other titles were exchanged for changeable Standing Stones, similar to the Doomstones in Oblivion only with effects that reign permanent until another stone is encountered and activated. The Mysticism school of Magicka was also eradicated and new spell-based attacks known as Dragon Shouts were introduced.

Skyrim‘s first DLC, The Elder Scrolls V: Dawnguard released in June 2012. The storyline revolved around a group of Vampire Hunters known as the Dawnguard, opposed by the villainous Volkihar Clan. The plot divided at a quest called “Bloodline“, where the Dragonborn decided whether to assist the Vampire Hunters, or become a member of the undead themselves. This was the first instance in which vampirism became a key element in an Elder Scrolls game; it also marked the creation of the Vampire Lord and werewolf skill tree perks. Dawnguard also saw the return of the crossbow, a projectile weapon first appearing in The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.

Skyrim’s second DLC is known as Hearthfire, allowing house building and adoption elements to the game.

The third DLC, Dragonborn, was released on December 4, 2012. The plot involves traveling to the island of Solstheim and the return of a mysterious former Dragon Priest and one-time ruler of the island. Unlike the ancient Dragon Priests of Skyrim, he’s purportedly the first individual to be gifted with the dragon blood, much like the Dragonborn, and possesses the ability to absorb Dragon souls. The DLC adds new quests, characters, locations, weapons, armour, and the abillity to tame and fly a dragon.

Online

In 2012, industry sources confirmed that ZeniMax Online Studios was working together on The Elder Scrolls: Online, an MMO based in The Elder Scrolls universe. [5] Based in the Second Era, Mannimarco, King of Worms returns to divide Tamriel. The game features the entire map of Tamriel, and allows for multiple players to engage in the game globally.

Game mechanics

The Elder Scrolls games can be safely categorized as role-playing games, although they do include elements taken from action and adventure games. However, in contrast to other games of the genre, The Elder Scrolls maintains a unique, skill-based approach to character advancement. A multitude of skills can be raised through use, and once a character’s skills have increased sufficiently, their level increases in reflection of those skills. Because of this, players are allowed immense flexibility and choice in character advancement. This is perceived as both a strength and a weakness in the series by gamers, although the flexibility of the games’ engines has facilitated the release of game extensions (or mods) through The Elder Scrolls Construction Set that change the skill and level mechanics.

The Elder Scrolls main series of games emphasizes different aspects of the gaming experience from most computer role-playing games. A brief by Joystiq in early November 2006 contrasted BioWare’s creations to Bethesda‘s by noting a difference in emphasis. Bethesda’s creations focused on “aesthetic presentation and open-ended adventuring”; BioWare’s on a combat system and modular architecture.[6] The series’ overarching aim has been noted by their designers as well. Bethesda has described their motivations in creating the first series game, Arena, as those of any good pen-and-paper RPG: creating an environment in which the player could be what the player wants and do what the player wants.[7] Daggerfall‘s manual begins with a sort of design manifesto, declaring the developers’ intention to “create a book with blank pages”, and “a game designed to encourage exploration and reward curiosity”. Choices, in the form of paths taken by the player, to do good, to chase after evil, are left open to the player, “just like in real life”.[8] This design trend continued with Morrowind, following the hiatus of similarly epic games in the interim, though Joystiq’s previously noted insistence on graphics came again to the fore. During the development of Morrowind, Bethesda tripled its staff, so as to perfectly color its newly hand-made world. In their own words, “We knew we had to exceed the visual polish of the other games on the market, and we made it our goal to put The Elder Scrolls back into the forefront of game innovation.”[9] The Elder Scrolls series’ emphasis on freedom remained. In the words of Bethesda’s Morrowind Prophecies, “Experience it as you wish.”[10]

The series’ grand ambitions have put some members of the gaming press into an apparent position of subdued skepticism prior to the release of each new game, incredulous as to Bethesda’s capacity to surmount its obstacles. Nonetheless, whether this be a grab for reader interest or a true sentiment on behalf of the game press, such feelings evaporate by the end of each unvaryingly warm review the series’ games receive.[11]

These mechanics exist in contrast to most RPGs, where experience points are the sole measure of a character’s advancement, and levelling up drives skill increases.

Cosmology

Tamriel map
The continent of Tamriel on the planet of Nirn.

The world of TES is known for its attention to detail, realism, and the long, complex lists of names, dates, and places. They constitute its extensive history and the vast, interconnected structure of its various societies, cultures, and religions much more than most players are familiar with.

Furthermore, there is no one compilation of all information pertaining to TES, and, within the games, historical references are often vague or

The Elder Scrolls Universe

unsure. Players are encouraged to draw their own conclusions about situations and events for which the records are few and incomplete or when competing viewpoints obscure the truth. This has spawned a subculture amongst TES players of history and philosophy debaters affectionately called loremasters.

The Elder Scrolls games take place on the continent of Tamriel, a large landmass divided into nine provinces. An exception is The Elder Scrolls Legends: Battlespire, which takes place between the realm of Oblivion, an alternate dimension ruled by the Daedra, and the mortal realm of Mundus. It is known that there are continents besides Tamriel in the Elder Scrolls planet known as Nirn, but there is yet to be an official game that takes place in one.

The nine provinces of Tamriel and some other continents are :

The other continents of Nirn:

  • Atmora is the ancient land of the Atmorans before settling in Skyrim and becoming the Nords.
  • Akavir is a land east of Tamriel; it is home to five different races, all seperated by their individual empires. It is believed that the dragons originally came from Akavir, and then moved to Skyrim.
  • Yokuda lies west of Tamriel and was home to the Redguards before they escaped to Tamriel, when a massive, devastating event occured within the continent which sank the entire land, lost forever to the vast oceans of Nirn. The Redguards arrived to Tamriel in the Year 808 of the First Era, where they settled in Hammerfell. Though it is known that Yokuda sank long ago, the cause of the catastrophe is still debated today.

While each of the ten playable races has a “home province” or province of origin, they are not limited to this province and can be found outside its borders, though they are a minority. It should also be noted that the home province of the Orcs is, in fact, a city-state called Orsinium, which lies within the borders of High Rock.

Other races included in TES lore are Ayleid, Chimer, Dwemer, Falmer, Hist, Imga, Kamal, Ka Po’ Tun, Maormer, Sload, Tang Mo, and Tsaesci. The Dwemer were destroyed for unknown reasons before Arena, but this is explained in Morrowind (Elder Scrolls III).

Mythology and religion

The Elder Scrolls places great emphasis on the idea of the dualism and equality of opposites. This dualism is not the Abrahamic dualism of good and evil, but more closely resembles a fusion of Eastern and pre-Christian Western beliefs on the subject, being the duality of order and chaos. According to Elder Scrolls Lore, the concepts of order and chaos can be translated collectively into everything. These notions might be more exactly approximated using the words “stasis” (unchanging continuity) and “force” (unknowable energy). Almost all Tamrielic religions strongly feature the idea that the world was created through an intermingling of these two things, some saying that time is a synthesis of continuity and alteration, and most religious creation-theories deal with one or more mythological characters representing these absolutes either procreating or engaging in combat (or both, as the case may be). The thought experiment of the irresistible force is often invoked, and much of the Elder Scrolls theosophical lore is devoted to developing and examining hypotheses as to how such a thought experiment might actually play out on all levels, were it metaphysically possible.

E3 2013: Answers from Elder Scrolls: Online

E3 2013: Answers from Elder Scrolls: Online

TheElderScrollsOnlineBannerThin

Wikia is here at E3 and we recently got a chance to get hands-on with The Elder Scrolls Online. To be honest, I was a big naysayer when I first saw the game last year. The game had been in a development for a long time and it failed to impress. After playing the game myself yesterday, it’s glaringly clear the team has put a lot of effort into improving the look and feel of Elder Scrolls: Online.

I don’t want to get into too many details about my short time with the game, but feel free to ask questions in the comments if you have any.

Some of you already submitted questions for the show, so let’s cut to the chase. Here are the answers I could scrounge up from Bethesda representatives about The Elder Scrolls Online!

1. Will The Elder Scrolls online interrupt with the lore of the series that we know and love?

According to the Bethesda rep I spoke to, the game adhered to continuity established in the series pretty closely. I imagine location details and geography may have to shift out of necessity, but he assured me the game’s lore is right for the time period.

Players in the game will also collect pieces of lore themselves in the form of books scattered and hidden throughout the world. The Lore page of the game features sections for lore and Bethesda specifically mentioned some books we have already seen in the series will be present in Elder Scrolls Online in their entirety.

2. Will there be mounts and will each race and factions have there own mounts.

In short, yes! Races, classes, and factions will feature prominently in the game. A hefty chunk of the game will be class or race specific quests, with their own rewards accordingly. Like other MMOs, various mounts in the game will be tied to these portions of the game according to a Bethesda rep.

3. Massive Scrolls: If I make steel armor in ESO, will it look different depending on what faction I’m a part of?

While I can’t confirm if every piece will look different, the rep did mention there would be faction-specific armor.

4. Thandeon: Will you see health, stamina and magicka in a bar on the screen? If yes, will it be like WoW where you see your character info in the top left corner?

I was immediately struck by how sparse the ESO interview appears. Nothing is on screen unless the value is changing by default, although this can be toggled on. When using spells, Magicka appears in a small bar on the lower screen. Health and Stamina are similar hidden until use.

5. TheInfamousLyingHarlot: …does anyone know if some form of pet will be available?

The rep was a bit vague in this regard, but yes, there will be pets in the game.

6. I’m wanting to know if there will be marriage or adoption options.

As for marriage, yes! The Bethesda rep hesitated to answer and then answered in the affirmative. While the game calls these unions “pledges” intead of “unions”, players will actually be able to seal their commitment to other players with an exchange of rings. How romantic!

As for adoption, the game will not be shipping with the feature but Bethesda left the idea open for the future.

7. Grimm King: I need werewolf status. Make it happen Bethesda.”

Done! Bethesda has confirmed that players in the game will be able to become both Werewolves and Vampires, although not at the same time. Most interestingly, the Werewolf and Vampire traits are actually upgradeable skill trees in their own right! Players will be able to invest points in each tree, gaining new abilities and strengths as they progress.

8. I want to know if there will be any Lesser Daedra.”

Based on the lore in the game, it seems Lesser Daedra will certainly make an appearance. Much of the story pertains to the Daedric Princes.

9. Will there be a First Person mode available within the game?

This question was already answered, but just to be safe, yes! After trying out it myself too, it looks great. I might now actively play thay way in the game since it cuts off so much from view, but role-players may find it charming and anyone looking to pick up and move objects individually might find it useful.

10. I wonder if it’s true that there is an uncanny amount of freedom to be had in customizing your character, such as mages being able to wield two-handed weapons…

The Bethesda rep confirmed that all types of armor will be available all classes. However, some armor has more benefits than others. While a mage might choose to wield heavy armor, she would be constrained in other ways.

11. Jonesy95: Will it be free-to-play, subscription-based, or a one-off payment?

Sorry, no news as of yet. Personally, I would predict the game would begin with a subscription based model.

That’s all folks! Thanks for the questions!

Quick Keys and dual Wielding

XBOX – To assign a Quick Key on the Xbox 360;

  1. Add the spell or weapon to the favorites menu,
  2. Open the favorites menu (Using D-Pad U/D)
  3. Highlight the item to be used on a quick key
  4. Hold the D-Pad Left or D-Pad Right button until a number appears next to to the item selected (1 and 2 for the respective buttons)

Spells

Press the quick key a second time to dual-wield spells Spells will default to the left hand, Weapons to the right one.

Melee Weapons

Melee Weapons can’t be dual-wielded using quick keys. Unless it’s a stackable weapon, pressing the quick key a second time will only replace for the previous weapon.

Some enchanted weapons are stackable at first but if the charge levels become different they cease to be stackable and the quick keys can no longer be used for dual-wielding.

Bows

Bows are unsheathed, equipped, and sheathed, unequipped, as other weapons – by pressing the sheath/unsheath button (default, R, on PCs). To remove an arrow from a loaded bow without shooting it, press the sheath/unsheath weapon button. Hold down the right hand button to ready an arrow; how far the arrow will go – how far back the string is drawn – is determined by how long the right mouse-button is held (up to some maximum which appears to be a few seconds holding – this may be dependent on Marksman level). The arrow will be shot at the point in the center of the cross-hair when the r-button is released.

For people that have one, here is a link to the Kinect Voice Commands. Kinect

Third Person Camera Control

  • On the Xbox and PS3, the camera can be controlled by holding down the right analog stick and moving the left analog stick.
  • On PC, the zoom is controlled by the scroll wheel.

Trivia

  •  PC   version allows for Screenshots of the game; the Print Screen key is usually found on the top right hand section of the keyboard. (If you are a Mac user, instead press: Apple key ⌘ + Shift + 3 then release. This tool gives you a screenshot of Skyrim). The files are labeled Screenshot#.bmp, and written in a deeply buried subdirectory: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\skyrim, for example. Using a Find tool for Screenshot*.* can help locate the files. Any simple graphics program, such as Paint, can then be used to edit and save as PNG files for common usage – as, for instance, writing and editing in this wiki. PS3 and Xbox 360 players can’t take screenshots without a capture card.
  •  PC   An easier method is to use the Ctrl + Print Screen command to create a Screenshot on the “Clipboard” which can then be pasted into any program using the Ctrl + V (paste) command.
  •  PC   version has built in Xbox 360 controller support, allowing for those with the Xbox 360 Common Controller to seamlessly transition between Mouse and Keyboard and a Controller.

Bugs

  • Using a spell such as blizzard can glitch out anything in cases including books, armor, weapons, etc. Any high explosive spell should work (needs more testing, Blizzard tested on PS3). Blizzard doesn’t harm non-hostile NPCs making it safe to use in populated areas.
  • Copying a Spell Tome: place the book on the bookshelf then exit out of the book shelf then quickly click the place the book ends up then read the book when it is on the shelf then exit click the book then everytime you actvate the book shelf the book will end up there.
  • The Oghma Infinium can be read over if done in a certain order. To see how to do the full exploit, click here.
    • Each time the above exploit is used, the maximum book capacity of the bookshelf is increased by one. This will not change the amount that is shown on the shelf, but the ones that are not shown will still show up in the bookshelf menu. (This bug was patched in the recent 1.9 update for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.)
  • Gallus’ Encoded Journal may get stuck in your inventory as a Quest Item. To fix this, get caught and go to jail, break out and when you retrieve your items, don’t take the journal.

Elder Scrolls:Armor (Skyrim)

Armor (Skyrim)

Armor is a type of apparel found in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. When worn, armor increases a character’s armor rating and thus helps to reduce the overall damage inflicted from physical attacks. In addition to offering protection from physical attacks, armor can be enchanted to grant additional types of protection, to bolster certain skills, or to increase stats such as Stamina or Health.Dwarven Helmet SK2

Types

There are two types of armor available, Heavy Armor and Light Armor, both with their own skill tree and associated perks. Both types have their advantages and disadvantages. Use of the Steed Stone can negate many of the the disadvantages of heavy armor.

Heavy Armor

Main article: Heavy Armor (Skyrim)
Advantages

  • Offers a greater variety of armors available to craft.
  • Offers a greater number of Perks to choose from.
  • Offers much more protection from physical attacks.
Disadvantages

  • Makes more noise than light armor, so sneaking is harder.
  • Slows down movement much more than light armor.
  • Stamina is drained much quicker while sprinting.

Light Armor

Main article: Light Armor (Skyrim)
Advantages

  • Much lighter than heavy armor.
  • Makes less noise than heavy armor, so sneaking is easier.
  • Less stamina is drained while sprinting.
Disadvantages

  • Offers fewer variety of armors available to craft.
  • Offers fewer number of Perks to choose from.
  • Offers much less protection from physical attacks.

Armor sets

Main article: Armor Sets (Skyrim)

An armor set is defined as a complete set of armor that includes one matching armor piece for the head, chest, hands and feet.

There are several different armor sets available in Skyrim, both in heavy and light variants. Certain armor sets can provide special bonuses if the full set is worn. See the main article for a full list.

Elder Scrolls:Weapons (Skyrim)

Elder Scrolls

The Weapons featured in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim are very diverse. They range from swords and maces to axes, bows, and daggers.

There are dozens of different types, ranging from iron at the lowest level and Daedric weapons at the highest. With the addition of The Elder Scrolls V: Dawnguard, Dragonbone weapons, which are stronger than Daedric weapons, can be created.

They are essential tools of survival in Skyrim, and can be bought, looted, stolen, forged, or received as a reward. Weapons can be upgraded at a grindstone with the right material.

The following is a complete list of weapons in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and its add-ons.Dragonbattleaxe

Elder Scrolls-Factions (Skyrim)

Factions (Skyrim)

Factions are organizations of people with a common goal in Skyrim. The Dragonborn can join several of these factions. Upon joining, specific tasks, known as quests can be administered by a higher-up or leading official of the faction. Each faction has a specific guildhall or headquarters that remains static for the entire storyline, with the exceptions of the Dark Brotherhood and the Blades. Each faction has a clear leader, such as Arch-Mage Savos Aren for the College of Winterhold, Delphine as the Grandmaster of the Blades, and Paarthurnax as the leader of the Greybeards.Bards-College

Comparisons with other games

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was the last Elder Scrolls title to employ the conventional four factions, which were called “Guilds”. These factions included the Thieves Guild, the Mages Guild, the Fighters Guild, and the Dark Brotherhood. While Skyrim kept the Thieves Guild and the Dark Brotherhood, the Fighters Guild and Mages Guild were exchanged for different factions. Due to the Mages Guild splitting into the Synod and the College of Whispers, the guild could not logically appear in titles preceding the Great War. Thus, the College of Winterhold, making its debut in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim , appeared as a joinable faction. The Companions replaced the Fighters Guild, canonically aligning with Ysgramor and Nedic lore prevalent long before Skyrim‘s inception.

The Vampire Clans from The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall and The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind were omitted as well, with a newer adaption surfacing in Skyrim‘s first plug-in, The Elder Scrolls V: Dawnguard.

Unlike in Oblivion where each faction had a clear hierarchy of ranks the Hero could rise through, by performing certain tasks, Skyrim is less consistent between the factions. For example, the only rank attainable in the College of Winterhold, aside from being a basic student, is that of Arch-Mage. The Stormcloaks and the Imperial legion however, have specific ranks. All of these factions can give you a place to stay, like the other games, more or less, and perks to upgrade.

Perks of joining factions

F faction armor
Faction-specific armaments from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Some factions, such as the College of Winterhold grant a special uniform upon joining which can be worn optionally either to reap the bonuses of the armor or for role-playing aesthetic. More extreme benefits, such as becoming a werewolf can only be achieved by joining factions. In this example, joining the Companions opens up the opportunity for becoming a werewolf.

Other factions may provide amenities to the Dragonborn, such as sleeping quarters, containers that never reset for safe item storage, and free access to crafting stations such as Arcane Enchanters and Forges. Once a member attains a certain rank, they can freely take any items from the guild hall.

Certain guild-mates cannot be unlocked as followers or potential spouses unless a given faction is joined. For example, the College of Winterhold has three possible followers and two possible spouses within its walls. J’zargo, Onmund, and Brelyna Maryon are all potential college followers, with only Onmund, and Brelyna Maryon being eligible for marriage.

Because guild members can come and go at any hour of the day, joining a faction is wise for vampires, since there will be an abundance of sleeping guild-mates that can be accessed without breaking and entering, trespassing, or sneaking. Additionally, they provide safe havens that can be quickly entered to avoid sustaining Sun Damage.

Expulsion and availability

Vampire Being Attacked
A vampire being attacked by a guildmate, after she was caught feeding on him.

Factions possess some integral rules. Members cannot steal, murder, or attack other members of the guild without risking expulsion, arrest, or the faction’s members becoming relentlessly hostile toward the Dragonborn. Some will desist if the bounty is cleared.

While most factions can be joined at any time throughout the main storyline, some factions can only be joined for a limited amount of time or are entirely unavailable upon joining another faction. In the former example, the Forsworn can be temporarily aligned with while fleeing Cidhna Mine, similar to the Hero of Kvatch joining the Mythic Dawn to temporarily advance the questline. In the latter example, the Skyrim Civil War has two clear sides: the Imperial Legion and the Stormcloaks. At a certain point within the Civil War questline, one side must be selected to the exclusion of the others; if the Stormcloaks are joined, you can join the Imperial Legion if you give them the Jagged Crown. On the other hand if you join the Dawnguards vampire hunters or the Volkihar Clan you cannot switch to the other.
